Biometrics refer to a (digital) passport photo, signature and/or fingerprints. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) uses this information to establish identity and for ordering a residence permit.
The IND may not always have recent biometrics on file. In such cases, a visit to an IND office must be made as soon as possible. Once the IND has the complete biometrics, a new residence permit can be issued.
Below are some examples of when providing biometrics is crucial:
- If the biometrics have not been collected previously by the Dutch representation abroad
- If the collected biometrics abroad have not been correctly transferred to the IND
- For each new application, new biometrics are required
- For children under the age of 1, only a passport photo is needed. New biometrics will need to be provided once they are older (only when the residence permit has expired).
The IND does not charge any fees for taking biometrics.
